The first Council of Portsmouth Students Summit (CoPS) for 2017/2018 officially started again on Monday 14th November 2017 and it was a huge success! Students from a range of different schools attended, such a colleges, secondary schools, private schools and SEN schools. An amazing mix of students created a buzz that was very powerful to see.
The day started with an introduction to CoPS, which has been running successfully for 16 years in Portsmouth. The focus of the first summit is to identify the key issues in schools and the community and creating solutions to tackle these problems. It was also essential that the CoPS students selected an executive group to take the lead for the year. The caliber of speeches from those running for positions on the executive group was impressive; such talent from so many young people in the city. All the candidates spoke with conviction, confidence and passion and showed a keenness to take CoPS to the next level and to create some essential, long-lasting change in the local schools represented.
The ideas and inspirations for school improvements were outstanding and each action group team showed great team-building and problem solving skills, evidenced in the wonderful improvement strategies that arose. The sense of ownership and agency within each pupil was inspirational and it gives huge scope and hope for the year ahead.
So it is with great excitement and anticipation that we look ahead at what the young people of Portsmouth will achieve for their schools this year! Thank you to all the students who got involved and came along. What a great day it was. Also, a big thank you to all of the teachers, link teachers, head teachers and support staff who have encouraged and facilitated the young people attending CoPS this year. This year will be our best one yet!
